Description
This area is known as a tropical hardwood hammock. Hammocks tend to be on slightly elevated ground often surrounded by swamps or marshes. The canopy in this one consists mainly of oak and palm with ferns on the forest floor. Some of the oaks here are quite ancient as you can see. Highlands Hammock State Park is Florida's oldest, established in 1931. The park has over 9000 acres and is located in Highlands County, just outside of Sebring.
