Description
All of Florida's bromeliads are epiphytes which means that they grow on other plants or trees. The host plants are only used for support and are not parasitized by the bromeliad. Ten of Florida's 16 native bromeliads are listed as either threatened or endangered. Loss of habitat , illegal collecting and the mexican bromeliad weevil are the greatest threats to Florida's bromeliad population. The specimen on the left is the Cardinal Airplant which is considered to be an endangered species. Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area is in Osceola County, Florida.
