Description
Split Oak Forest has many wonderful and diverse ecosystems. On this trail I encountered oak hammocks, pine forest, prairies, and cypress domes during a two mile hike. I also had encounters with deer, armadillos, and squirrels, as well as a bald eagle soaring overhead. Split Oak Forest is named for an oak that was split down the middle by a lightning strike and survived. It appears to have over six trees growing from a single trunk. (See the photographed titled "The Split Oak".) The area is currently is being preserved for the preservation of gopher tortoises which are a threatened species. Split Oak Forest is a 2200 acre tract in Orange and Osceola counties.
