Artist's Description
The Econlockhatchee River has always been one of my favorite places to visit. The cypress trees stand like sculptures along the river. In this area it is more of a creek. It's source is a large densely forested swamp known as the Econlockhatchee River Swamp in Osceola County.It continues through Orange County and eventually flows into the Saint Johns River in Seminole County. I started my journey in the Hal Scott Preserve and hiked two miles through the scrub before reaching the river. Old growth cypress trees line the banks here as it meanders through the forest. I've also traversed the river further downstream in my tiny boat where the banks are lined with sugar sand and at times reach heights of 30 feet or so. The native american name Econlockhatchee translates into "The River of Mounds". The Econ is 54 miles long and is the Saint Johns River's second largest tributary.
About Chris Kusik
Chris was born in southern Delaware in 1960. As a teenager he began studying maps of Florida and dreamed of exploring the state and it’s natural treasures. In the early 1980’s he moved to Central Florida. During his travels throughout the state he discovered the beauty of it’s swamps, prairies, springs, rivers and lakes. This led to an interest in photography and it’s ability to document his adventures. He also developed an interest in astronomy. He studied the work of Ansel Adams and his “zone” system as well as the works of the his colleges in the “f 64 club” of art photographers. It became apparent that researching the accomplishments of painters would also be beneficial. Chris began to establish his own style, a fusion of art and...
