Description
The Econlockhatchee River has always been one of my favorite places to visit. The cypress trees stand like sculptures along the river. In this area it is more of a creek. It's source is a large densely forested swamp known as the Econlockhatchee River Swamp in Osceola County. It continues through Orange County and eventually flows into the Saint Johns River in Seminole County. I started my journey in the Hal Scott Preserve and hiked two miles through the scrub before reaching the river. Old growth cypress trees line the banks here as it meanders through the forest. I've also traversed the river further downstream in my tiny boat where the banks are lined with sugar sand and at times reach heights of 30 feet or so. The native american name Econlockhatchee translates into "The River of Mounds". The Econ is 54 miles long and is the Saint Johns River's second largest tributary.
