Artist's Description

As I hike a tram road leading to the Econlockhatchee River, I marvel at the size of the giant fan shaped leaves of palms overhead. They are doing a good job of providing shade in a tropical climate. The road was constructed for the purpose of
logging cypress perhaps 100 years ago. A small scale removable railroad track would be laid down on the roads to transport huge cypress trees harvested in the forest. I gaze sadly upon fallen giants that were cut down a century ago only to be left behind because the equipment available was unable to handle their massive 500-1,000 year old corpses. Most of the ones that were hauled away would be reincarnated as shipping crates for citrus. My sad thoughts are replaced by the joy of the beauty that surrounds me. I came to capture the magic of the palm hammock on this side of the river. The contrast of the sharpness on the "boot jacks" of the palm trunks and the soft bed of ferns below attracts my attention. Chris was born in southern Delaware in 1960. As a teenager he began studying maps of Florida and dreamed of exploring the state and it’s natural treasures. In the early 1980’s he moved to Central Florida. During his travels throughout the state he discovered the beauty of it’s swamps, prairies, springs, rivers and lakes. This led to an interest in photography and it’s ability to document his adventures. He also developed an interest in astronomy. He studied the work of Ansel Adams and his “zone” system as well as the works of the his colleges in the “f 64 club” of art photographers. It became apparent that researching the accomplishments of painters would also be beneficial. Chris began to establish his own style, a fusion of art and...
