Artist's Description

Tsien Shun-chu being a "hsrang-kun-chin-shih" (an officer) lived in the time of Sung (Chinese Dynasty 960-1280), was one of the eight beaux esprits (intellectuals) in those days, Chao Meng-fu being another. He could paiint everything with the same wonderful dexterity, and he seemed to study portraits, birds and flowers, taking patterns by Chao Ch'ang and sceneries by Chao Cli'ien-li. Through Chao Meng-fu, taking service at the court of Yuan, became a dignitary and was followed by many who wished to win the worldly fame. Shun-chu never ceased to paint and write through life. This fact speaks fully for the characteristics of his works. This print of many rats biting a melon represents something quite simple and refreshing, his command of the brush being so reasonable. The print of the cock's combs, kept in the temple of Hompo-ji of Kyoto and the present one are the best of his works in this country (Japan).
