Artist's Description
Chassahowitzka Spring Group is one of Florida's best kept secrets. The word Chassahowitzka is an Indian name meaning "land of hanging pumpkins", a wild variety that once grew along the banks. The run forms a river that runs for five miles into the Gulf of Mexico. It contains many large rocks, which are hazardous to boat traffic. It is home to hundreds of species of birds including the Bald Eagle as well as the West Indian Manatee during the winter season. Pods of dolphins are often seen navigating the river. There are many tributaries to explore with a boat, often with a spring as it's source. One can easily explore this area for days. In 1941, approximately 31,000 acres of freshwater tributaries, saltwater creeks and hardwood hammocks were designated as a National Wildlife Refuge. The springs are in Citrus Country, Florida

Thank you Leslie!. Florida has more freshwater springs than anywhere else in the world. I remember balancing on slippery rocks with my tripod in chest deep water and worrying about my medium format camera going into the drink!
