Exploring the Green Swamp is an adventure in itself. One can be driving through lowland swamps one minute, and suddenly be navigating the pure white quartz sand of an ancient dune 100 miles long and 10 miles wide left over from the Miocene epoch some 5-20 million years ago. From experience I've learned to avoid roads with names such as "Powder Grade" while visiting. Traversing these roads are not for the faint of heart. This particular area was so dense with vegetation that a color image would be lost in a mass of green shades. The swamp is a hive of activity for plant life. I chose a high contrast black and white film to capture this menagerie of nature's geometric shapes. Green Swamp is a critical recharge area for the Floridian aquifer as well as the source of the Hillsborough, Withlacoochee, Ocklawaha, and Peace rivers. Chris was born in southern Delaware in 1960. As a teenager he began studying maps of Florida and dreamed of exploring the state and it’s natural treasures. In the early 1980’s he moved to Central Florida. During his travels throughout the state he discovered the beauty of it’s swamps, prairies, springs, rivers and lakes. This led to an interest in photography and it’s ability to document his adventures. He also developed an interest in astronomy. He studied the work of Ansel Adams and his “zone” system as well as the works of the his colleges in the “f 64 club” of art photographers.
