Artist's Description
Eastern Screech Owls are only nine inches in height as full grown adults. Like other species of owl the females are larger than the males. Grey morphs are not uncommon. They are often found in wooded swamps and prefer older trees with hollows. The hollows are home to their favorite prey of insects, reptiles and small mammals including bats and mice. They also feed on small birds. Screech owls have an acute sense of hearing which helps them locate prey.During the late-winter breeding season, males make nests in cavities, sometimes reusing abandoned nests of other animals, to try to attract females. The females select their mate based on the quality of the cavity and the food located inside. During the incubation period, the male feeds the female. These birds are monogamous, with both male and female attending to the young.
