Artist's Description

Sandhills in central Florida are "refugias".They were islands two million years ago when most of central and south Florida was submerged. Many of the plants and animals in this ecosystem are also found in the deserts of the Southwestern U.S. Most of the sandhills in Northern and Central Florida have been replaced by pine plantations, citrus groves, rangeland, agriculture, and commercial and residential development. The largest expanses are located in the Florida Panhandle. Fire plays an important role in the ecosystem. Without it, woody undergrowth, oaks and hickories would take over the land, crowding out native plant and animal species. The Longleaf pines are the dominant species of trees on sandhills, and act like lightning rods and help ignite the underbrush. As they grow they develop plates of bark that disperses the heat of a fire and flake off as they burn, protecting sensitive inner bark. They have the ability to live for 300-500 years.

He studied the work of Ansel Adams and his “zone” system as well as the works of the his colleges in the “f 64 club” of art photographers. It became apparent that researching the accomplishments of painters would also be beneficial. Chris began to establish his own style, a fusion of art and...
