Description
The Rocks consist of ancient Anastasia limestone. Waves sculpt the rock over time. The water will often shoot up through holes in the rock carved from the sea creating unanticipated fountains of sea spray. This is one of the largest areas of exposed Anastasia limestone on the Atlantic Coast. It is mainly composed of sand, bits of shell, and fossils cemented together over time. Although the formations are not uncommon, they are usually found submerged beneath the sea or underground. Early Spanish settlements in Florida used the rock for the construction of forts for it's durability and ability to withstand cannon fire. This area along the Florida coast is in Flagler county.
