Artist's Description
Sunspots are magnetic storms up to 8,000 miles in diameter. This photo was taken during a partial eclipse when the Sun was at a peak of activity. A special filter was attached to the telescope allowing only 1/10,000th of 1% of the light to pass through. Observing the sun through a telescope unfiltered can cause instant blindness. Even the viewfinder must be covered as a precaution. As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun. This can happen only at new moon, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy. About Chris Kusik
Chris was born in southern Delaware in 1960. As a teenager he began studying maps of Florida and dreamed of exploring the state and it’s natural treasures. This led to an interest in photography and it’s ability to document his adventures. He also developed an interest in astronomy. He studied the work of Ansel Adams and his “zone” system as well as the works of the his colleges in the “f 64 club” of art photographers. It became apparent that researching the accomplishments of painters would also be beneficial. Chris began to establish his own style, a fusion of art and...

Thanks Marvin. Yeah, It's a little scary. You have to cover the finder on the scope so that you don't look through out of habit or it will blind you instantly!

Thanks Guys and Gals! Views of your awesome stuff shows that we have many things in common in our approach to produce fine art. Don't try this at home, even the viewfinder on the telescope can cause blindness or catch your shirt on fire!
