Description
Pine flatwoods occupy about half of the total land area of Florida. Undisturbed areas tend to have an open understory composed of palmettos and shrubs such as Wax Myrtle and Tar Flower. A slight drop in elevation created the cypress swamp seen in the background. Split Oak Forest contains many ecosystems within it's 2,000 acre boundaries including oak hammocks, prairie, cypress domes, and pine forest. A variety of wildlife can also be found including deer, armadillo, and many species of birds. The area has been set aside as a sanctuary for the gopher tortoise, a threatened species.
