Description
I spotted this one searching for food on an old Oak in Shingle Creek Regional Park in Kissimmee. The park offers a glimpse into Florida's past with a citrus grove dating back to the early 1900's. Original buildings are still on the site. The Pileated Woodpecker is a very large North American woodpecker, roughly crow-sized, inhabiting deciduous forests in eastern North America, the Great Lakes, the boreal forests of Canada, and parts of the Pacific coast. It is also the largest woodpecker in the United States. Adults are up to 19 inches long, span 30 inches across the wings and, with an average weight of just under half a pound. Each wing measures up to 10 inches, the tail measures up to 6.9 inches. The call is a loud, far-carrying laugh, sometimes described as a "jungle bird" call due its wild, un-fettered quality.
