Description
The dry prairie in Florida is natural plant community consisting of grasses, low shrubs and palmettos occupying vast stretches of flat open land. The community is unique to South Central Florida. The combination of frequent fires, lack of drainage, and hard packed soil inhibits tree growth. The prairie is occupied by some rare animal species including crested caracaras, grasshopper sparrows, and The Florida burrowing owl. I am attracted to the stark, natural beauty of these prairies. The soft texture of the grasses, the geometry of the palmettos, and the large cumulus clouds floating like sailing ships in the sky above. Thee Lakes Wildlife Management Area is part of the largest area of dry prairie remaining in the U.S.
