Artist's Description
Split Oak Forest has many wonderful and diverse ecosystems. On this trail I encountered oak hammocks, pine forest, prairies, and cypress domes during a two mile hike. I also had encounters with deer, armadillos, and squirrels, as well as a bald eagle soaring overhead. Split Oak Forest is named for an oak that was split down the middle by a lightning strike and survived. It appears to have over six trees growing from a single trunk. (See the photographed titled "The Split Oak".) The area is currently is being preserved for the preservation of gopher tortoises which are a threatened species. Split Oak Forest is a 2200 acre tract in Orange and Osceola counties.
About Chris Kusik
Chris was born in southern Delaware in 1960. As a teenager he began studying maps of Florida and dreamed of exploring the state and it’s natural treasures. In the early 1980’s he moved to Central Florida. During his travels throughout the state he discovered the beauty of it’s swamps, prairies, springs, rivers and lakes. This led to an interest in photography and it’s ability to document his adventures. He also developed an interest in astronomy. He studied the work of Ansel Adams and his “zone” system as well as the works of the his colleges in the “f 64 club” of art photographers.
