Description
Lysander Cattlehearts derive the color in the wings from structural color rather than pigment. The colors come from the interaction of light with tiny structures which are spiraling channels of air intersecting in three dimensions. The colors are produced much like a rainbow or a holograph on a credit card. These are called gyroids, which seem to have evolved separately in certain lineages of butterflies.
