Description
I came across this fellow hunting along the shoreline while exploring Chassahowitzka National wildlife refuge. This area is a beautiful estuary where freshwater springs flow into the Gulf of Mexico. ( A photograph of one of the springs can be be found under the "Wetlands" category of my home page.) The area's name is derived from Seminole meaning "the land of hanging pumpkins",a plant which used to be common here. I've seen pods of dolphins and other saltwater creatures navigating the spring run. The great blue heron is the largest of the North American herons. It has head-to-tail length of 36 to 54 inches, a wingspan of 68 to 79 inches, a height of 45 to 54 inches, and a weight of 4.6 to 7.9 pounds. The primary food for Great Blue Heron is small fish, though it is also known to opportunistically feed on a wide range of shrimp, crabs, aquatic insects, rodents and other small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and small birds.
