Description
The swamp is a busy place visually with many geometric shapes and patterns. This is an abstract study of its natural beauty. Palm leaves and the remains of an old cypress are in the foreground. Midway through the image a submerged cypress tree and "knee" stand in black tannic acid stained water. In the background of the image is a tropical hardwood hammock containing oak, cypress, palm, bromeliads and ferns. Exploring the Green Swamp is an adventure in itself. One can be driving through lowland swamps one minute, and suddenly be navigating the pure white quartz sand of an ancient dune 100 miles long and 10 miles wide left over from the Miocene epoch some 5-20 million years ago. From experience I've learned to avoid roads with names such as "Powder Grade" while visiting. Traversing these roads are not for the faint of heart. This particular area was so dense with vegetation that a color image would be lost in a mass of green shades. The swamp is a hive of activity for plant life. Green Swamp is a critical recharge area for the Floridian aquifer as well as the source of the Hillsborough, Withlacoochee, Ocklawaha, and Peace rivers. Most of the landscape is pine flatwoods, cypress domes, and hardwoods swamps. Wildlife that may be seen on the area include alligator, white-tailed deer, bobwhite quail, armadillo, gray squirrels, feral hogs, and a variety of birds.
