Artist's Description
Pelicans are often seen cruising the shoreline searching for schools of fish. They often fly in a line formation. They use thermals to fly at 10,000 feet or more and commute distances of up to 90 miles to feeding areas. Pelicans also "skim" over stretches of water, using a phenomenon known as ground effect to reduce drag and increase lift. As the air flows between the wings and the water surface it is compressed to a higher density and exerts a stronger upward force against the bird above. Hence substantial energy is saved while flying. They have an average wingspan of six feet. Pelicans have mainly remained unchanged for the last 30 million years. They are found on every continent except Antarctica. Photograph taken at Melbourne Shores in Brevard County.

Thanks Lynn! My favorite beach. Still a few laid back "Mom and Pop" motels on the beach here! Sea turtles nest in the fall in this area.
