Description
Caladiums enjoy the moisture and diffuse light provided by the tree canopy. The forest floor is rich in nutrients from decades of plant decomposition. Bromeliads, many varieties of ferns including giant leather ferns over 13 feet tall inhabit the swamp. The cypress population is very healthy here with hundreds of trees per acre. As the seeds from the trees cannot germinate underwater, cypress require that the land remains dry for part of the year. In many cases the trees can live for over 1,000 years. The cypress trees along the creek provided early settlers with shingles for their homes, hence the name. As the area grew a train depot and general store several miles from here. The Shingle Creek Basin forms the headwaters to the Florida Everglades.
