Description
This blue dasher was resting peacefully on a caladium leaf when I snapped this photo. These dragonflies grow to about 1.5 inches long. They are very agile. I've seen them capture bees in mid flight. The Blue Dasher is a dragonfly of the skimmer family. It is common and widely distributed in the United StatesDragonflies were some of the first winged insects to evolve, some 300 million years ago. Modern dragonflies have wingspans of only two to five inches, but fossil dragonflies have been found with wingspans of up to two feet. There are more than 5,000 known species of dragonflies. In their larval stage, which can last up to two years, dragonflies are aquatic and eat just about anything, tadpoles, mosquitoes, fish, other insect larvae. Dragonflies are expert fliers. They can fly straight up and down, hover like a helicopter and even mate mid-air. If they can't fly, they will starve because they only eat prey they catch while flying.
