Description
These are one of the most beautiful lizards. The Five-lined Skink is one of the most common lizards in the eastern U.S. and one of the seven species of lizards in Canada. Although common, they are not often seen. Skinks are very secretive, often living in rotten stumps and logs. With about 1200 described species, skinks are the second most diverse family of lizards, exceeded only by geckos. Skinks are active during the day and typically bask on rocks or logs. Many species of skinks bear live young, hatching eggs internally. Five-lined Skinks are ground-dwelling animals. They prefer moist, partially wooded habitat that provides ample cover as well as areas to bask in the sun. Skinks are very snake-like, often using body motion to propel themselves. When I was a child my father offered a reward to the first person to catch one. I won! I've been fascinated with them ever since.
