Description
This lovely historical property is a stark contrast to the busy tourist corridor in Kissimmee, Florida located just a few miles away. Everything remains much as it was when Mister Babb who was a native of Hardeman County, Tennessee moved to Kissimmee in 1914. Old orange, grapefruit, and tangerine groves can be found on the property as well ornamental trees. Beautiful Shingle Creek which is the headwaters to the Florida Everglades borders the farm. The town which is located on the doorstep of Walt Disney World, was founded in the mid-19th century as Allendale, it was renamed Kissimmee when incorporated as a city in 1883. The name, Kissimmee, came from 'Cacema', an Indian name meaning 'long water'. Its growth can be credited to Hamilton Disston of Philadelphia, who based his two-million acre drainage operation out of the small town. Disston had contracted with the financially wobbly state of Florida to drain its southern lands, for which he would own half of all he successfully drained. This deal made Disston the largest single landowner in the United States.
